At the start of each academic year, University of Kansas students attend Traditions Night in Memorial Stadium. Students sing the school song and wave the wheat as they learn about generations-old KU traditions. Speakers included KU Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway, professor of English Jim Carothers, and KU basketball coach Bill Self, who coached his team to a stunning 2008 NCAA championship. Photos by Lisa Scheller/KU Endowment

Jason Sneegas is a fifth-generation KU student from Lawrence. His great-great grandfather, A.R. "Bert" Kennedy, started for two years on the KU football team in the 1880s. He later returned to the school to coach the team, leading the team to an undefeated season in 1908. (Photo information from University Daily Kansan, Sept. 10, 2008)
